A number of Jewish leaders in Surinam, Dutch Guiana, object to the dissemination of unsigned leaflets there calling for support of the plan advanced by the Freeland League to admit 30,000 Jews to Surinam, Mrs. Archibald Silverman, of Providence, R. I., reported today on the basis of an appeal she received from Paramaribo, capital of the island.
The appeal asks Mrs. Silverman to “inform all Jewish authorities” in the United States that the Freeland League project is “harmful,” and points out that it is hard to imagine “that there are still Jews who prefer to come here rather than go to Israel.” The leaflet to which some of the Jews in Surinam take objection emphasizes that the League’s project must be promoted now that Surinam has received its independence and needs additional population, capital and technical knowledge to develop the country.
