Police today arrested Dr. Hans Wassermann, a German, charged with kidnaping the German Jewish journalist Berthold Jacob and delivering him to the Nazis in Germany.
Dr. Wassermann was reported to be a personal friend of Herr Jacob, who vanished Saturday from his hotel in Basle. His disappearance provoked the suspicion that he had been kidnaped by the Nazis and taken to Germany, because in his writings he has exhibited a knowledge of developments in Nazi Germany which was based upon information constantly received by him from friends who remained in Germany. A day after Herr Jacob disappeared, all his friends in Germany were suddenly arrested.
This led the Swiss police authorities to assume that Jacob had been kidnaped by the Nazis when they learned that he always carries with him a notebook containing the names of his friends in Berlin. Herr Jacob left Germany when the Nazis came to power in 1933.
The Swiss Cabinet is showing keen interest in the case of Herr Jacob. The entire police force in Switzerland has been ordered to find the kidnapers.
