Three men who are convicted and sentenced to death several years ago on charges of spying for an “enemy state” — presumably Israel — were hanged by Syrian authorities yesterday in downtown Damascus, it was reported here from the Syrian capital.
Two of the men hanged were Tawfiq Salih al-Abdallah and Farhan Fandi al-Halabi, who were convicted of espionage and sentenced to death on October 15, 1960. They were identified as Lebanese. The third man executed was Awad Raja Abu al-Layl, who was convicted and sentenced to death on December 1, 1962. He came from a Syrian town near the Israeli border. Al Thawra, the Government-controlled newspaper, carried pictures of the three bodies of the executed men suspended from the gallows.
