The first public demonstration by Damascus Jews against their oppression by Syrian authorities was reported today by Supreme Court Justice Haim Cohen. Cohen, who heads the Public Committee for Jews in Arab Lands, said he learned that a few weeks ago several hundred Jews demonstrated in Damascus. He did not say how Syrian authorities reacted.
Cohen addressed a rally near the Western Wall. Another speaker, Police Minister Shlomo Hillel. said the Israeli government has made every effort to improve the situation of Jews in the Arab countries. He warned the Syrian government to stop persecuting Its Jewish citizens.
