A master plun for a $50,000,000 harbor improvement program designed to make Tel Aviv one of the most modern deep-sea ports in the eastern Mediterranean is under consideration by the Israel Government, it was reported by Alexander Zipstein, manager of the port, upon his arrival here yesterday.
Mr. Zipstein said that port authorities at Tel Aviv have already spent $100,000 on studies for this program. The master plan, drawn up by an American concern of consultant marine engineers, would include the erection of modern piers, wharves and other docking facilities together with adequate equipment for loading and discharging cargo.
At present, he said, the Tel Aviv port is virtually without docking facilities. Ships must anchor off-shore and discharge cargoes and passengers onto lighters and barges. Mr. Zipstein will remain in the United States one month during which time he will make an inspection tour of American port facilities and operating methods, particularly cargo handling.
