The peace agreement signed by David Ben-Gurion and Vladimir Jabotinsky in London to establish peace in Palestine was rejected by the plebiscite conducted yesterday throughout the country by the Histadruth, the Palestine Federation of Labor, among its members.
While complete returns of the plebiscite will not be made public before late tonight, early compilations show that approximately 12,000 voted against ratification of the agreement with Jabotinsky, and 9,000 for it.
PRESS PESSIMISTIC
Returns are still coming in from the smaller colonies and may lead to an increase in the number of ratification votes, but the Hebrew press today strikes a pessimistic note.
“The defeat of the moderate Laborites who would like to see the agreement with Jabotinsky ratified is a grave mishap for the entire Zionist movement,” the Haaretz, leading Hebrew daily, says in an editorial today, forecasting the negative result of the plebiscite. “Even opponents of the Laborites should not rejoice at the divulged fact that the Extremists are constantly growing in the ranks of the Palestine Labor Movement.”
TEL AVIV SAYS NO
Returns thus far tabulated show that in Tel Aviv 3,983 votes were cast against ratification of the agreement with Jabotinsky, and 3,296 for ratification. In Haifa, the vote was 3,785 against and 1,555 for acceptance. In the Judean colonies 1,119 voted in the affirmative and only 882 voted in the negative.
