The task of transporting 150,000 displaced Jews ## Europe to Palestine within a short period and their temporary accommodation in ?estine until they take their place within the Jewish community’s economic life ## require upwards of $400,000,000, Eliezer Kaplan, Jewish Agency treasurer, to##nt told an emergency meeting of the United Palestine Appeal board of directors.
Asserting that “we plan to bring at least a million Jews to Palestine in ## next ten years,” Kaplan pointed out that “our most immediate task will be to ##ar both Cyprus and the reception centers in Palestine of the more than 20,000 ##s waiting in some cases two years, to be integrated into the economy of Palestine. ##disclosed the Agency’s intention of approaching the proper “governmental and in##-governmental bodies which are equipped to assist us in these tasks,” but added that “for our most immediate needs we must turn to the Jewish communities.”In citing the requirements of the Jewish State, Dr. Israel Goldstein, U.P.A. ##irman, pointed out the existence of an “erroneous impression” concerning the “vast ##ate lands in Palestine which will be at the dispocal of the Jewish State.” He de##red that the amount of state land available is less than three percent of the land ##loted to the Jewish State. “Therefore, absorption of new immigrants will necessiate the acquisition of land purchased as heretofore,” he stated.
