There is little doubt that Klaus Altmann who is residing in Bolivia is the wanted Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie, according to a BBC-TV survey of the case. It is also unlikely that he will ever be returned to France to face trial for the murder of a French resistance leader and the deportation of thousands of French Jews during World War II when he was gestapo chief in Lyons, the BBC stated. It also credited Mrs. Beate Klarsfeld, an anti-Nazi German married to a French Jew, with compiling evidence that Altmann is Barbie. “She has made a contribution by proving that the children of Klaus Barbie and the children of Klaus Altmann have the same names and were born on the same dates which could hardly be possible unless Barbie and Altmann are the same man.” the BBC report stated.
