There were 1.16 million Israelis living below the poverty line last year. This represented a small increase over the previous year, when the total stood at 1.13 million, according to statistics issued Monday by Israel’s National Insurance Institute. Though small, the increase in 2000 came during a year in which the economy expanded at a rate of 6 percent and salary levels climbed.
