Representatives of Egypt, Syria and Lebanon staged a walk-out today when A. Ben Yehuda, representatives of Israel at the International Conference on Public Education, rose to review the development of education in the Jewish state. Delegates from all other Moslem countries, however, remained in their seats.
After describing the efforts which the Israeli Government undertook to provide education to the children of Arabs resident in the new state, Mr. Ben Yehuda asserted that the greatest educational achievement in Israel lay in the revival of the Hebrew language, while the chief problem in the field of education was the introduction of compulsory free schooling and the training of qualified teachers for the expanding population. The Israeli delegate’s report was received with keen interest and was followed by animated discussion.
