Three Rumanian war criminals have been sentenced to varying terms, from one year’s imprisonment to life in prison, for their part in the deportation in 1941 of the entire Jewish population of the town of Suceava, in Bukovina, it was reported here today. All three were officers in the pro-fascist army.
The chief defendant, Col. Petre Zamfirescu, received a life term for organizing the deportation and including in the convoys Jews with infectious diseases and other hospital cases. Major Horatiu Tanasesou, who was head of the military hospital in Suceava at the time of the deportation, was sentenced to ten years for his part in the crime. Capt. Constantin Tautu, who stole valuables from the deportees, received the one-year sentence.
