Sen. Hiram L. Fong (R. Hawaii) today became the 75th sponsor in the Senate of the Jackson amendment which would forbid the U.S. government from giving trade benefits to the Soviet Union unless it lifts its restrictions on emigration. The significance of Fong’s adherence means three-quarters of the Senate now is backing the measure and that as a member of the Republican Party he is opposing President Nixon’s policy of “quiet diplomacy” in the emigration issue.
A spokesman for the United Nations confirmed today that UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim will pay an official visit May 6-12 to five Scandinavian countries and that his discussions there will include the Middle East. Waldheim was invited by the governments of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. This will be Waldheim’s first visit to Scandinavia since becoming Secretary General.
The Munich municipal authorities have given Austrian actor Helmut Qualtinger permission to read extracts from Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” at the city’s Kammerspiele, following Bavarian Finance Minister Ludwig Huber’s refusal to let him read at the state-sponsored Cuvillies Theater. Huber protested that Munich wanted no Hitler revivals. Qualtinger will read in Munich on March 25 and later in Nuremberg.
