Governor Thomas E. Dewey today received for approval the bill establishing a state university system in New York and outlawing special and religious discrimination in the state’s institutions of higher learning. The measure was approved yesterday by the Assembly.
Former Governor Herbert H. Lehman, addressing a meeting of the American Association of College Professors at Hunter College in New York, hailed the proposal and pointed out that “there is much discrimination, based on prejudice, in admission ###f students to private colleges and professional schools.In many private colleges ##he enrollment of Jewish students seems never to exceed certain fixed quotas.”
Cautioning that the “establishment of a State University will not entirely solve that problem,” Governor Lehman declared “there must also be adequate legislation which outlaws discriminatory practices to the end that equality of educational opportunity shall be available to all regardless of race, creed, color or national origin.
