Trygve Lie, the first Secretary-General of the United Nations, died today at a Norwegian resort at the age of 72. Mr. Lie was Secretary-General during the eventful years when the British Government renounced the Palestine Mandate and the United Nations voted to partition Palestine into Arab and Jewish states. He was considered sympathetic and understanding of the Zionist position and was regarded as having been instrumental in the UN decision.
During the first years of Israel’s independence and until his resignation in 1953. Mr. Lie was regarded as friendly to the Jewish state and was helpful to it on many occasions. He retained a close interest in Israel after his retirement from the post.
