Two Israel trawlers netted 600 tons of fish this year, saving the government 40 percent on foreign currency expended on fish imports, Ezra Darin, managing director of the Ezra Deep Sea Fishing Company of Petach Tikvah, said at a press conference today.
The vessels were named by Belgian seamen, who will be replaced by Israelis just as soon as their training is completed, he said. The trawlers will operate during the coming fishing season in waters off Iceland. Israel’s present annual fish consumption is 22,000 tons, Mr. Danin reported.
