The United Nations General Assembly today voted to assign a discussion of the Israeli application for membership in the international body to its Ad Hoc Political Committee. The vote was 42-12, with three abstentions.
Today’s vote was considered in U.N. circles to be an important step in expediting Assembly action on the membership bid. The overwhelming nature of the vote was not interpreted here as representing the true sentiment of the delegations towards Israel’s application, since many of the delegates voted on the principle of expediting the business of the current session.
Other items were assigned to the Ad Hoc Committee at today’s meeting, but it is generally expected that the Israeli application will receive first consideration when the Committee reconvenes tomorrow morning.
