Israel’s significant advance in the field of nuclear physics was given confirmation by UNESCO and the International Union for Pure and Applied Physics, which have selected Israel for their 1957 International Conference on Nuclear Structure. Mr. Dewey Stone, chairman of the board of governors of the Weizmann Institute announced today that the conference will be held at the Institute in Rehovoth, September 9th to 13th inclusive.
Over 130 scientists from various countries will attend as delegates. Twenty-six scientists from eight different countries will deliver papers on the progress made in various fields of nuclear physics. The scientists who will present reports hail from the United States, Denmark, France, Britain, Holland, Sweden, the USSR and Israel.
(In Rehovoth, the Weizmann Institute announced today that it had named two scientists from abroad–one an American the other a Hungarian refugee– to its staff. The American, Prof. Theodor Winnick, formerly Associate Professor of Biochemistry at the State University of Iowa, will set up a new biochemistry section at the Institute. The Hungarian Jewish refugee is Dr. Michael Baranyi, until recently a lecturer at Budapest University and a former inmate of Buchenwald, who will join the Institute’s biophysics department.)
