Secretary-General U. Thant confirmed at a news conference here today that he has received an invitation from four Arab governments to visit the Arab refugee camps in the Middle East, but said that he will not go unless he sees the possibility of “positive results” from a visit to the area. The Arab refugee camps are located in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and in the Gaza Strip, which is under Egyptian jurisdiction.
The invitation was ostensibly linked to the financial difficulties faced by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, which cares for the Arab refugees. The agency is facing a deficit of $4, 200, 000 and has warned that it may be compelled to reduce its assistance to the refugees. Yesterday, Sweden pledged $2, 000, 000 to help meet the deficit.
