Roger Garreau, president of the U.N. Trusteeship Council, which is now meeting here on the question of Jerusalem, indicated today that he will do everything in his power to avoid the possibility of the Jerusalem issue being returned to the U.N. General Assembly.
Formal consideration of the issue will begin tomorrow and Mr. Garreau is exerting considerable influence in an effort to find a solution which would be acceptable to Israel and Jordan.
The situation today was generally as follows: supporters of the Vatican requesting that Jerusalem should be fully internationalized are Belgium, Iraq and the Dominican Republic, but other Catholic countries, such as Argentina and the Philippines, are still waiting and watching for any move by the United States and the United Kingdom. Australia will follow the British line, when it becomes known.
The representatives of Britain and the United States avoid expressing opinions in the current “corridor discussions.” However, they have indicated opposition to taking the issue out of the hands of the Trusteeship Council and to forwarding it to a special session of the U.N. General Assembly. They seem anxious to settle the Jerusalem question in Geneva in order to avoid another Soviet-Catholic-Arab coalition.
