The United States consul at Geneva has lodged a complaint with the Swiss authorities against the Geneva police who are charged with having insulted and detained unnecessarily Abe Goldberg, American newspaperman who was attending the sessions of the League of Nations. Mr. Goldberg’s attempt to buy a cigarette lighter caused him all the unpleasantness.
After examining the lighter, which was valued at two dollars, Mr. Goldberg left the shop without buying it but as he was leaving the proprietor charged him with stealing it. Despite his American passport and his admission card to the sessions of the League of Nations Mr. Goldberg was arrested and after being insulted was detained for several hours. When the lighter was not found on his person after he had been thoroughly searched, the police released him without an apology.
