Dr. Nahum Goldmann, chairman of the Jewish Agency and principal negotiator of the German-Israel reparations agreement, left for Europe today to launch negotiations with the Austrian Government for a settlement of Jewish claims against Austria, arising from Nazi confiscation of Jewish assets.
Other Jewish leaders who are leaving for Europe to participate in the negotiations are Jacob Blaustein, president of the American Jewish Committee; Dr. Israel Goldstein, president of the American Jewish Congress; and Adoplh Held, chairman of the Jewish Labor Committee. The joint executive board of the Committee of Jewish Claims on Austria, in which the four American Jewish leaders will take part, will meet in Paris on June 14. Participating in this meeting will be representatives of Jewish organizations in Britain and France and representatives of the Association of Jewish Communities in Austria.
This meeting will be followed by meetings with Chancellor Raab of Austria. The Jewish leaders will discuss with the Chancellor the general outline of the Jewish case. Towards the end of the month, committees of experts representing the Jewish groups and the Austrian Government are expected to sit down to negotiate an agreement. The negotiations have been initiated by an invitation from the Austrian Government.
