Plans for the absorption of an estimated 75,000 Jewish children to be transferred from North Africa to Israel by 1960, and the acceleration of vocational training and social services for recently-arrived youth in Israel were discussed here today as the Mizrachi Women’s Organization of America.
After hearing reports which stressed the traditional religious background of the vast majority of North African Jews, the delegates voted to expand facilities at the Bessie Gotsfeld Children’s Village and Farm School in Raanana, Israel, and the Mosad Aliyah Children’s Village in Petach Tikvah to accommodate and train new arrivals from Morocco.
Mrs. S. Deborah Ebin, national president of Mizrachi Women, called the absorption of Moroccan Jewry one of three major tasks for Mizrachi Women in the coming year. She called for emergency measures in absorbing Moroccan Jewish children in existing Mizrachi Women’s institutions. “For a brief period at least,” she said, “we must return to tents instead of housing, if necessary, to absorb these refugees from the mellahs of North Africa.”
