American policy on Jerusalem and the Arab refugee issue was defined today to members of the United Nations Palestine Conciliation Commission who conferred with Secretary of State Dean Acheson and other State Department officials.
Stuart Rockwell, acting American representative on the Commission, said that agreement has been reached on the procedure to be followed by the Commission. Reports received by the Commission and State Department from the economic survey mission of Gordon R. Clapp were reviewed, as was the problem of implementing the mission’s report.
A spokesman for the Commission said that complete agreement was reached on all matters discussed. The visit was considered significant in view of the expected debate of the Jerusalem issue before the United Nations in two or three weeks.
The name of a new American representative on the Conciliation Commission is being submitted to the White House for approval, it was learned today. The new appointee will fill the vacancy created by Paul A. Porter. Sources close to the State Department said that the appointment is being made on the premise that it will be on a more permanent basis than the two earlier nominators for the post.
