Rep. Seymour Halpern, New York Republican, today urged the White House Conference on Children and Youth to give emphasis in the nation’s schools to the history of Nazi anti-Semitism. He warned that youths in America were using the swastika as a prankster’s symbol with “no awareness of the true meaning of the hateful swastika.”
He asked Ephraim R. Gomberg, executive director of the conference, to use this influence to have the forum recommendations committee dealing with school curricula embody this proposal in its findings. “We have criticized the German educational system for not including an honest study of this period, but have left our own educational process free from criticism about this issue,” he said.
