Delegates attending the UNESCO conference here today heard Israel’s Minister to France, Maurice Fischer, declare that the Jewish state was “happy and proud to join an organization whose aims are akin to the ideals of universal brotherhood taught by Isaiah.”
Emphasizing that Israel, “while engaged in a struggle which sometimes appeared superhuman, succeeded in pooling the efforts of those who in exile contributed everywhere to human research,” and continues today to inspire education, culture and science. The Israel Minister expressed the hope that the fact that political differences have not yet been settled will not serve as an obstacle to cultural cooperation between the Jewish state and countries of the Middle East.
Mr. Fischer voiced the hope that the current conference would succeed in creating a situation enabling Israel to play a part in the regional group to which it belongs, because of its geographic position and cultural background. He assured the delegates at the parley that Israel would work toward that end in a spirit of good will. Mr. Fischer’s statement was warmly applauded by all delegates to the conference, including the Egyptian chairman of the session, Chafik Dhorbal Bey.
