Immediate transfer of 100,000 displaced European Jews to Palestine, as recommended by the Anglo-American inquiry committee, was called for in a resolution adopted today at the closing session of the biennial convention of the United Synagogues of America. The convention called on President Truman to implement his proposal for transporting the Jews without further deliberations and consultations “with parties whose viewpoints are known in advance.”
Other resolutions endorsed the President’s campaign for voluntary curtailment of food in American homes in order to provide more food for overseas relief, and pledged support of the United Jewish Appeal campaign for $100,000,000 in 1946.
Dr. Robert Gordis, president of the Rabbinical Assembly of America, speaking yesterday, urged American Jewry to “put philanthropy and good will, civic defense and anti-defamation where they belong, on the periphery of Jewish life, and place the sophisms upon the source and center of Jewish vitality, the Torah. For it is the law and the lore of the Jew, his religion and his culture, his way of life and ideal inspiration,” Rabbi Gordis concluded.
Samuel Rothstein of New York was re-elected president of the organization for the next two years.
