The Uruguayan Embassy in Washington has informed the World Jewish Congress here that steps have been taken by the Uruguayan authorities to track down and punish the perpetrators of recent swastika carving attacks in Montevideo.
The attacks, in which swastikas were carved on the bodies of a girl and a doctor, were brought to the attention of the Uruguayan Embassy in Washington by Samuel Bronfman, vice-president of the World Jewish Congress and Chairman of the North American executive committee of the organization.
In a telegram to Mr. Bronfman, Mr. Bautista Ochoteco, Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of Uruguay in Washington, stated that the Uruguayan authorities “have taken the proper steps to uncover and punish the perpetrators of the crime involving the carving of swastikas on a young girl’s body.” The Uruguayan official added that the incidents had provoked “unanimous condemnation in all sectors of Uruguayan society.”
