The Vatican newspaper Osservatore Romano came to the defense tonight both of Italy’s Jews and those “Aryans” who have shown them pity. An article declared that racial hatred could not be justified, either on scientific grounds or by ethnical, political or social arguments.
Condemning those who have been bitter in their criticism of pity for the Jews, Osservatore declared this sentiment was in line with the charity and humane conceptions taught by Christ. The newspaper took severe exception to those theaters which have announced plans to refund the seasonal subscriptions of Jewish patrons, declaring that the expulsion of Jews from all performances was practically impossible.
