JASSONIDES’ RETORT
Jassonides retorted that the Jews had intervened with the League of Nations when Greek officials tried to enforce a Sunday closing law.
This charge also was branded a lie by Senator Sciaky, who recalled that the Jews of Greece had refused minority rights and declined to join the Committee of Jewish Delegations considering that the Greek laws were sufficient for them and that they needed no special protection.
Even the Venizelist majority in the Senate cheered Senator Sciaky and congratulated him on having completely refuted the anti-Semitic attack of Jassonides.
The Senate, which is controlled by the Venizelist party, rejected a measure suppressing the Jewish electoral college in Salonica, which forces the Jews to vote for a separate Jewish list instead of voting with all other Greek citizens.
