“Sovietische Heimland,” the Yiddish monthly in Moscow sponsored by the authorities and edited by Aaron Vergelis, has launched an attack upon Yosef Kerler, a Soviet Jewish poet who has settled in Israel, describing him as “a traitor.” The article seeks to prove that Kerler’s 10-year imprisonment was due his having committed a crime, rather than his being a victim of the Stalin persecutions. The “Heimland” said “Now the Zionist in Israel exploit Kerler and make him slander the Soviet Union.”
