Jewish newspapers throughout Austria today expressed apprehension over the negotiations between Chancellor Schuschnigg’s government and the Austrian Nazis, which are reported to be progressing favorably.
Anxiety is rife in Jewish circles over the pending rapproachment and its possible consequences for the Jews of Austria, should an agreement be reached and the Nazis enter the government.
Stimme, Zionist organ, urges the government to safeguard the equality of all citizens, without any qualifications whatever.
The anti-Semitic press, on the other hand, is urging the government not to pay any attention to “Jewish intimidation abroad” if it is possible to strengthen the regime by agreement with the Nazis.
Failure of the Schuschnigg regime to appoint even one Jew to a post on the important state corporations for industry, finance and commerce is regarded here as highly significant of what is in store for the Austrian Jews.
Special committees chosen by the government and the illegal Nazi party are in conference, and an agreement, it is said, is only a question of time. The Nazis are reported to be holding out for complete “Aryanization”‘ of Austria, but are willing to make concessions along other lines. If the negotiations succeed, the Nazis are expected to enter the Fatherland Front and to receive a number of cabinet posts.
