Walter Gieseking, German concert pianist whose from the United States was demanded yesterday by the American Jewish Congress and the Anti-Defamation League on the ground that he was a Nazi collaborator, was scheduled to return to Germany by air today after he was detained by agents of the immigration and Naturalization Service.

The first in a series of nation-wide concert performances which he was scheduled to give at Carnegie Hall yesterday to a sold-out house was canceled at the last minute. Immigration Service officials said they undertook a preliminary investigation Gieseking’s record, despite the fact that he obtained a visa to the U.S. which was approved by the State Department. (A State Department spokesman in Washington explained today that the Department did not have sufficient evidence to bar Gieseking from the U.S. at the time a visa was issued to him.)
