The two day celebration of the 80th jubilee of Temple Tifereth Israel, the spiritual leader of which is Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver, was concluded here with a dinner at the Cleveland Hotel where more than 1,500 people applauded addresses by Felix M. Warburg and Newton D. Baker, former secretary of war. Mr. Baker spoke on the part “The Temple” played in Cleveland in the last 80 years while Mr. Warburg discussed the status of Reform synagogues in America.
Mr. Warburg, touching on the situation in Palestine, assured Cleveland Jewry that there are no reasons to despair and expressed the wish that the recently created united front in American Jewish life might remain. He appealed to the Jews of Cleveland to make the $6,000,000 Allied Jewish Campaign a success and he discussed this matter with leading Jews of the city.
The celebration, which was in the nature of a tribute to Rabbi Silver, was featured by the unveiling of a bronze bust of Rabbi Silver which was presented to “The Temple”. A warm greeting from President Hoover as well as from other men prominent in religious and civic life were read.
The first day of the celebration opened with a sermon by Rabbi Silver. Later in the afternoon Mr. Warburg in an address at the Men’s Club of “The Temple”, appealed to the Jews of Cleveland to assist in the upbuilding and development of the Hebrew University.
