Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher today reiterated previous calls for a renewal of the Euro-Arab dialogue on a high political level. On the eve of a visit by the Secretary General of the Arab League he also claimed that the Middle East policy of the European Economic Community (EEC) was “evenhanded,” and that the Palestine Liberation Organization should be associated with Mideast peace talks.
As of September, PLO chief Yasir Arafat is expected to assume his new role as Secretary General of the Arab League for a limited period of time. Observers here believe that putting the Euro-Arab dialogue on a high political level — which constitutes a major change from the previous European stance toward this institution — would pave the way for regular meetings between the PLO leader and West European foreign ministers and heads of government.
