Israeli air, armor and artillery units participated last night in the largest airborne operation ever undertaken in Israel. Observers who witnessed the war games compared the exercise with the Mitleh Pass battle where Israeli paratroopers, dropped deep behind the Egyptian lines, held the vital Sinal pass until major ground units arrived.
The setting for last night’s operation, witnessed by senior army officers and Western military attaches in Israel, was a hilly region. Large numbers of paratroopers were dropped, together with heavy mortars, jeeps, plasma and other medical supplies. Then, with the support of artillery and tanks, the flying infantrymen swept forward to overrun an “enemy” stronghold.
