The World Jewish Congress today issued a statement expressing “deep concern” over the reported decision of the drafters of the Austrian Peace Treaty in Moscow that no special compensation will be paid for unrecoverable Jewish property, stolen or destroyed by the Nazis.
The statement, signed by Dr. A. Leon Kubowitzki, secretary-general, urged that this decision be reconsidered. It also expressed the hope that the body which will have to claim, administer and ultimately distribute heirless Jewish property in Austria will consist not only of the representatives of the local Jewish communities in Austria “embracing only a small number of Jewish survivers” but will also be representative of the 90,000 surviving Austrian Jews abroad.
