The World Jewish Congress today urged the United states Government to guarantee that strong and positive measures be taken to safeguard the interests of the Jews in the course of implementation of the new directive issued last week to Gen. Lucius D. Clay, U.S. commander in Germany, on the military government of that country.
In a letter to the State, War and Navy Departments, the W.J.C. declared that while the development of self-government in Germany is understandable as an aid to ?emocratizing the country, “we must make certain that the government agencies are in the hands of those who believe in and practice democracy.” It also called for more intensive indoctrination of American troops in Germany against anti-Semitism, transfer of heirless property to a Jewish rehabilitation fund and warned against “abandoning” the displaced Jews to German rule.
