Sentences of 25 years and five years imprisonment were imposed yesterday by a military tribunal in Lydda on two Israeli Arabs who confessed to charges of setting off a bomb that injured 22 people in the Hebrew University cafeteria in Jerusalem on March 6. A third has pleaded guilty.
Fathi Salem Khalil, 22, student at the university, received a sentence of 25 years. Assid Nimir Asawi, 22, a waiter at the Holyland Hotel, was sentenced to five years imprisonment. Both come from Touraan Village in Galilee. Asawi received a lighter sentence after it became apparent that his guilt was only in placing his room at the disposal of the plotters. Immediately after the sentencing, another defendant, Adnan Marai Hassan Halaikhal, 23, said he also wished to plead guilty. Seven Arabs are accused of the crime. Mariam el Shachshir, 19, charged with placing the bomb in the cafeteria, was separated from the case with the others who pleaded not guilty.
