In a ceremony today in the garden of the American Jewish Congress building. Soviet Jewish emigre Dr. Mikhail I. Zand decorated a succah for the first time in his 44 years. The scholar, who is on a lecture tour of the United States, said public succot were not publicly displayed in his home city of Moscow, although some makeshift ones were set up in private apartments. The only one he had ever seen before today, he said, was in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, southwest of Tashkent. Today’s ceremony was attended by more than 100 AJCongress members and Mrs. Joan Dale of the Soviet Jewry activist group in London.
