A nation-wide poll to determine the support of American Jews for the Zionist program has been launched by the Zionist Organization of America, it was revealed today at the opening session here of a three-day Mobilization Conference of the Z.O.A., attended by 1,600 delegates.
It was reported that a similar survey conducted two years ago indicated that some 89 percent of the Jewish community supported Zionism. Zionist leaders in the United States feel that developments in the past two years have increased this sentiment and that the results of the poll will strengthen the hand of the Zionist leadership in its efforts in behalf of a Jewish Palestine. The present poll is being conducted by the Jewish Community Research.
A cable from Dr. Emanuel Neumann, Z.O.A. vice-president and member of the world Zionist executive, who is now in London to participate in the forthcoming informal talks between the Zionist leadership and the British Government, warned that hopeful forecasts concerning the results of these discussions are “premature and harmful.”
The message added that the decision of the World Zionist Congress against Jewish participation was received “understandingly in British Government circles,” which indicated a desire to maintain contact with the newly-elected executive. However, Dr. Neumann warned that it is “nevertheless of the utmost importance to recognize realistically the continuing gravity of the situation and to guard against optimistic expectations for which there is insufficient ground.”
