(JTA) — Police in Cyprus have detained for questioning 12 male teenagers from Israel on suspicion that they gang raped a 19-year-old woman from the United Kingdom.
The suspects, aged 16-18, were detained at the Mediterranean island’s Agia Napa resort on Wednesday after the woman filed a complaint with police, Israel Hayom reported Thursday.
Israeli media spoke to several of the parents of the suspects, who said their sons deny the allegations.
Amid tensions in Israel’s relationship with Turkey, tourism from Israel to Cyprus has increased dramatically, with dozens of flights departing from Ben Gurion Airport each week to the island during the summer months, according to Israel’s Channel 13.
