The government ordinance issued several days ago, introducing a higher tariff on almost all articles imported into Palestine from abroad, greatly increased the cost of living in the country. As a result of the ordinance, prices jumped rapidly.
The merchants delegation which called today on Sir Gilbert Clayton, Civil Secretary of the Palestine Government, and now acting High Commissioner, demanded that he postpone the date of this ordinance going into effect. They were told that the government would not consider the postponment of this higher tariff, unless sufficient evidence was submitted that the higher tariff on the imported articles would prove to be harmful to the Palestinian export.
