A unique scene occurred last Wednesday, the Day of Atonement, in the Supreme Court of Lithuanian.
The court was considering the appeal of a Jew, Dimant, 85 years old, who was sentenced in 1923 for attempting to bribe certain minor officials. Dimant, a poor man, had no counsel co ask for postponement of the trial on account of Yom Kippur. He therefore came to court and while the proceedings went on, he kept on saying his prayers from the Machzor.
After a consultation which lasted three hours, the Supreme Court judges acquitted Dimant.
