An appeal to the League of Nations that it should in trust Italy with the protection of the rights of Christianity in Palestine is contained in a communication directed by the Executive Committee of the Italian “Catholic Union For Protection of the Holy Places and Pilgrimages”, addressed to the Mandates Commission which is now in its Fifth Session at Geneva.

The appeal of the Catholic Union protests against the maneuvers of the Zionists to increase the Jewish rights in Palestine.

“Without race hatred or anti-Semitism, we regard the Jewish invasion and penetration of Palestine as a profanation of the Holy Land”, the communication states. “Zionism is based on an anti-Christian and materialistic conception of history, because it denies the deistic fact that the 2,000 years dispersion of the Jews is a sign of supernatural justice”, the Catholic Union further declares.

The Catholic Union in its statement appeals to the entire Catholic world to obey the call of the Pope for the celebration of the holy year, 1925, to check the development of Zionism, to organize conditions in Palestine in such a manner that shall secure the protection of Christianity’s inviolable rights, particularly Italy’s protection of the Coenaculum, the Christian Holy site of the Last Supper, which is demanded by the Catholics of Italy and which, the document claims, is Italian property.
