Ten thousand Jews, followers of the Chassidic movement, and 200 rabbis were present at the funeral of Rabbi Issachar Dov Rokeach, Chassidic Rabbi of Belz, who died here last Friday at the age of 75. Immediately after the burial of the late rabbi, his son Aaron, 42 years of age, was elected to succeed him as head of the Chassidic dynasty of Belz.
The late Rabbi Rokeach was the scion of a family which counts ten or twelve generations of rabbis and communal leaders in the Jewish community of Galicia. The late rabbi was an influential figure in Jewish religious life, exercising an influence not only in Galicia but among the followers of the Chassidic movement in many other European countries. During the Austrian regime and in the new Poland, the influence of Rabbi Rokeach constituted a political factor of which the governments took cognizance.
