Herman Bernstein, editor of the New York “Jewish Tribune” declared upon his arrival here that he had made a study of the Jewish situation in Roumania.
While in Bucharest he discussed the Jewish problem with Queen Marie and with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and the Interior.
ADOLPH S. OCHS CHOSEN TO HEAD ASSOCIATION OF N. Y. CONGREGATIONS
Adolph S. Ochs, publisher of the “New York Times”, was elected President of the recently organized Association of Reform Congregations at a conference held at the Community Center of Central Synagogue, it was announced yesterday. Twenty-three Reform congregations of Greater New York were represented.
Other officers elected were: Louis Marshall, Dr. Lee K. Frankel, Henry Morgenthau, and Albert L. Levi, Vice-Presidents, and the following were chosen as members of the Executive Committee: Henry M. Tach, Ludwig Vogelstein, Walter S. Hillborn, Meier Steinbrink, David E. Goldfarb, Seymour Mork, Maurice Blumenthal, Dr. Rudolph Grossman, Rabbi Jonah B. Wise, Dr. Simon R. Cohen, Dr. Nathan Stern, and Rabbi Solomon Foster.
The association was formed at a conference held two months ago. Meier Steinbrink, president of the 8th Avenue Temple of Brooklyn, presided at this conference at which a constitution was drafted and adopted.
Steps were taken for the launching of activities for the purpose of strengthening Reform Judaism in this part of the country. A campaign will soon be inaugurated aimed at reaching the unaffiliated, and an educational campaign will also be launched for the purpose of acquainting New York Jewry with the meaning of Reform or Liberal Judaism. Efforts will also be made to arouse interest in the Union of American Hebrew Congregations.
A Committee was appointed to secure membership in the Association of every Reform Congregation in Greater New York. This Committee is composed of: Messrs Arthur Eckstein. P. Irving Grinberg and Rabbi Jonah Wise.
Y.M.H.A. STARTS $1,500,000 BUILDING CAMPAIGN
The drive for $1,500,000 to erect an eleven-story building for the Ninety-second Street Y.M.H.A. was launched yesterday.
Judge Joseph N. Proskauer, president of the Y.M.H.A., described the need of the new building.
“Seven hundred and twenty boys vainly applied for lodging at the Y.M. H.A. last year, but they could not be accommodated because the one institution in New York to which a lad seeking a home under wholesome Jewish auspices would naturally turn, has dormitory space for only twelve boys,” Judge Proskauer said.
Judge Proskauer, who announced last week Felix M, Warburg’s contribution of $100,000 to the fund, said that $35,000 had been added to the amount already contributed. Of this sum $25,000 came from the Old Timers of the Y.M.H.A., to whom a quota of $50,000 has been assigned. Boys ranging in age from 16 to 20 years, who are members of the thirty junior clubs of the association, contributed’$10,000.
Headquarters were established in the Hotel Biltmore following a luncheon. The Old Timers will hold a rally at these headquarters on Thursday.
