The number of Russian emigrants who pass through Riga on their way to South America is increasing weekly, the average now being 100, mainly Jews. Among the emigrants to South America are also German colonists. The emigrants complain of living conditions in Russia which, they say, necessitates their emigration.
One half of the Jewish immigrants who registered with the Hias Bureau in Montevideo, Uruguay, 77 in number, came from Russia, according to a report received by the New York headquarters of the Hebrew Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society of America.
The others came from the following countries: 18, Poland; 16, Turkey; 13, Palestine; 10, Roumania; 5, Lithuania; 4, Hungary, and one each from Germany, Jugo-Slavia and Argentine. The total number of immigrants was 146, among whom were 46 married men, 33 single men, 22 married women, 14 girls and 26 children, from the ages of one to 10 years. Of the adult immigrants, 58 were skilled artisans and 62 had no trade at all.
