The Polish Telegraphic Agency states that the Central Committee of the B’nai B’rith in Poland has sent a cable to the headquarters of the B’nai B’rith in the United States, in reference to the protest against the anti-Jewish excesses in Poland addressed by the International President of the B’nai B’rith, Mr. Alfred M. Cohen. to the Polish Government, (given in the J.T.A. Bulletin of the 4th. inst.), in which it says:
The Central Committee of the B’nai B’rith in Poland considers it to be its duty to send you the following information with a request that it should be taken into account. Filled with the eternal truth of our ideals – benevolence, fraternity, and peace, we are greatly disturbed and ashamed because of the antisemitic excesses in Poland. The antisemitic National Democratic Party organised the immature students to commit acts of violence against their Jewish colleagues. These barbaric acts spread from the Universities to the streets, provoking disgraceful deeds of hatred.
We consider it, however, to be our duty to declare the following: (1) We have convinced ourselves with profound satisfaction that the Jewish students and the Jewish citizens defended their honour and possessions with courage and uprightness. (2) We place it on record with no less satisfaction that a considerable section of our Christian fellow-citizens not only did not join in the terrorism, but on the contrary, denounced the excesses with vigour, and generosity, and with genuine condemnation. (3) The Government did its duty sincerely and earnestly in restoring order and suppressing the excesses. If regrettable cases to the contrary occurred anywhere, it was the fault of the subordinate officials.
These three factors, the statement concludes, checked the excesses, so that they did not spread and become a catastrophe. This is the truth.
