Chicago Jewry honored Rabbi Stephen S. Wise’s sixtieth birthday anniversary with a celebration and dinner at the Stevens Hotel tonight, which he attended.
Rabbi Solomon Goldman and Professor A. Eustace Hayden were the principal speakers at the testimonial, which was sponsored by the Chicago committee of the American Jewish Congress, headed by Sigmund W. David.
Dr. Wise’s tireless efforts on behalf of Jewry were lauded by Rabbi Goldman. Dr. Hayden, who is a member of the Department of Comparative Religion in the University of Chicago, discussed the work of Dr. Wise for the cause of human rights and equality for the oppressed and downtrodden.
Dr. Wise responded with “My Battles.”
H. P. Grossman headed the active committee in charge of the celebration. An honorary reception committee of more than 100 Chicagoans, cooperating with the Congress, included the following:
