The University of Warsaw reopened today after having been closed by Polish authorities on March 14. The government ordered the university closed following a brutal attack by Endek students on Professor Herceli Handelsmann, aged Jewish dean of the history school.
Professor Handelsmann resumed his duties in the history school. There were no disorders of any kind. at the opening of the university.
Professor Handelsmann was returning from a student meeting where he had vigorously opposed the introduction of anti-Semitic measures at the university which would have made it almost impossible for Jewish students to earn money while attending school.
He was attacked while walking on the University campus. He was badly beaten and was taken to a hospital. Five Endek students, members of the National Democrats, anti-Semitic anti-government party were arrested and charged with assault on a government official. They face a penalty of five years imprisonment. Professor Handelsmann resigned as clean, but was prevailed upon to withdraw his resignation.
